If you’ve started looking into newborn photography in Northern Michigan and come away more confused than when you started, you’re not alone. It’s one of the most common questions I hear, and it’s a fair one: what am I actually paying for?

The short answer is that newborn photography pricing isn’t really one price … it’s a few separate decisions that get bundled together in people’s minds. Once you can see those pieces clearly, the whole thing makes a lot more sense.

Why Pricing Looks So Different From One Photographer to the Next

Part of the confusion comes from the fact that two Northern Michigan newborn photographers can have wildly different pricing structures while doing work that may look similar at a glance. One might charge a low sitting fee and high digital file rights. Another might build everything … session, digitals, and a set amount of wall art … into one number. Neither approach is wrong, but comparing them side by side without understanding the structure underneath is where most of the sticker shock comes from.

What’s Actually Included in a Session

In my studio, the session itself … your time with me, the posing, the safety, the slow and unhurried pace a newborn actually needs … is one part of the experience. What happens afterward is a separate, much more personal decision: you come back to the studio, see your images, and choose what you want to live with. That’s the ordering appointment, and it’s where digitals, wall art, albums, and any other keepsakes get chosen. Nothing is decided sight unseen.

Digital Files vs. Wall Art: Why They’re Priced Differently

This is usually where the real confusion lives. A digital file is a single image on a screen. A piece of wall art is that same image, printed, framed or mounted, and hung somewhere your family sees it every day for years. They’re not the same product, even though they start from the same photograph. I focus my studio around the second one … not because digital files don’t matter, but because a framed piece on your wall tends to actually get looked at, while a folder of files tends to stay on a hard drive.
